What's the Problem?

Discuss the problems that the main character faces within your book. What do those problems look like? Is it an external problem, internal problem, or both? What causes the problem? How is the problem being solved...or is it not? Are other characters apart of the problem? Is this problem getting worse or better as you read?

Please explain yourself as if I have not read the book in no less than EIGHT sentences.

  1. Justyce is dealing with 2 main problems I would say. Firstly, he is dealing with the police encounter. He is having trouble facing the underlying racism that came with it. He is also dealing with the racism from Manny's other friends, who believe racial inequality is dead. His second problem is with SJ and Melo. He is being pressured to not date SJ by his friends and mother, because she is white. Melo is also somewhat abusive and manipulative toward Justyce and he is unsure of how to handle it. At least as far as I have read.

  2. Justyce is dealing with a police encounter that is basically showing racism. Justyce was just trying to help out a girl from driving home drunk. A cop say him and thought he looked shady and decided to put Justyce in handcuffs. He is also having problems with his family. Justyce's best friend Melo doesn't like SJ but Justyce does get why nobody likes her. The cop problem was solved but the problem with no one liking SJ has not been solved. The cop encounter was an external problem. The SJ problem could be external and internal because externally people look at Justyce different like he is doing something wrong and internally it is making him self-conscious.

  3. Justyce has just underwent a brutal encounter with a racist police officer. Instead of the officer acting accordingly, he discriminated against Justyce without proof of a crime or wrong -doing. Justyce was trying to keep his friend safe after a night of partying by not allowing her to drive home under the influence. While the police officer could have actually used his power to help the two teens, instead used that power to criminalize an innocent boy. After the encounter, Justyce still received backlash, and it wasn't from the officer. His best friend Manny, cannot understand why Justyce would get back together with the girl that "caused" the incident with the officer. Justyce doesn't blame Melo for the encounter with the cop, but Manny sure does. Justyce really cares for Melo, but Manny just can't figure out why.

  5. The problem in the story is racism, The main character (Justyce) has recently got into trouble with a police officer who was really racist all because of Justyce´s ex who was drunk. Now Justyce is dealing with more racism stuff at school because of some kid named Jared who just swears that everything is equal now and even though Justyce plays along with his friends he knows deep down everything isnt equal. I believe this problem is both external and internal because he is facing troubles with people around him, but he is also facing problems within himself. Justyce doesnt know what to do with SJ and hes feeling a bit of betrayal from his best friend Manny.

  6. Justyce faces problems with racism and girls. When Justyce got into trouble with the police it really affected him. That's why I think Justyce is writing to MLK is to cope with what happen. Plus a couple days later the officer who Justyce had a run in with was shot. I agree with Manny that SJ is good for him and won't get him into trouble.

  7. The problem is that the main character of the story, Justyce has encountered one of the most scariest things in his life: racism. He was trying to help his ex-girlfriend, who was drunk, get home safely when he was struck in the head by a police officer. The police officer ended up being very racist as Justyce was trying to explain his side of the story. After all of that he goes to class and has a racist classmate named Jared who does not believe that all minority people should be equal.
